About: water leakage in washing machines
A puddle under the washing machine can damage flooring, cupboards and the machine itself, and leaks that start small tend to get worse. The key is to find where the water is coming from: the door, the detergent drawer, the hoses or the tub.
Leaks that appear only at certain stages, such as during fill, wash or drain, give a strong clue about the failing part. Tell our technician when you notice the leak and we can usually trace it much faster.
Common causes
Several different faults can cause the same symptom. These are the ones we see most often.
Worn or dirty door gasket
On front-load machines, a torn rubber seal or trapped hair and lint stops the door from sealing, so water drips from the front.
Excess detergent or wrong detergent
Too much suds, or normal detergent in a front-load machine, can overflow the drawer and run down the front.
Loose or cracked inlet hose
The inlet hose at the tap or at the machine can leak at a loose connection or a perished washer.
Drain hose or clamp problem
A split drain hose, a loose clamp or a poor standpipe fit can leak during drain.
Faulty inlet valve
A valve that does not close fully can let water seep into the tub and overflow.
Worn tub seal or cracked tub
Seal failure around the drum shaft leaks from under the machine and often comes with a grinding noise.
Pump housing leak
A cracked pump body or loose pump hose clamps leak near the bottom of the machine.
What you can safely check yourself
Try these simple checks before you call. If the problem remains, stop and book an inspection.
Check 1
Turn off the water tap and unplug the machine.
Check 2
Dry the floor and run a short cycle to see at which stage the water appears.
Check 3
Check the inlet hose connections at the tap and at the back of the machine; tighten them by hand.
Check 4
Wipe the door gasket and check it for tears or trapped hair.
Check 5
Use the correct amount of detergent and use low-suds detergent in front-load machines.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my washing machine leaking from the bottom?
Leaks from the bottom usually come from the drain pump, a loose hose clamp or a worn tub seal. Switching off and calling a technician early avoids floor damage.
Why does water leak from the front door of my front-load washer?
A damaged or dirty door gasket, an overloaded drum or too much detergent are the usual causes.
Is a leaking washing machine dangerous?
Water near the electrical parts of a machine is risky. Turn off the tap, unplug the machine if it is safe to do so and book a repair.
Can you repair a leaking tub?
Small seal leaks can be repaired. If the plastic tub itself is cracked, replacement of the tub assembly may be needed and we will explain the options before starting.
