About: not spinning in washing machines
If your clothes come out dripping, the spin stage has failed. Sometimes the drum turns slowly, sometimes it does not move at all, and sometimes the machine stops with an error. Spin failures can come from something as simple as an unbalanced load or from a worn motor part.
Because a spin fault can be caused by several different parts, a proper inspection saves money. Replacing the wrong part is costly, so our technicians test the drain, the door switch, the belt, the motor and the board before suggesting a repair.
Common causes
Several different faults can cause the same symptom. These are the ones we see most often.
Unbalanced or bunched load
Heavy items such as blankets and jeans can bunch on one side. The machine detects the imbalance and refuses to spin at high speed.
Water not draining
Many machines will not spin while water is still in the tub, so a drain fault often shows up as a spin fault.
Worn or loose drive belt
Top-load and semi-automatic machines use a belt between the motor and the drum or clutch. A stretched belt slips and loses spin power.
Door or lid switch fault
If the door lock or lid switch does not confirm that it is closed, the control board blocks the spin for safety.
Motor or carbon brush wear
Universal motors use carbon brushes that wear down over the years. Inverter motors can fail due to winding or driver faults.
Clutch or gearbox failure
In top-load machines the clutch connects the motor to the basket during spin. When it wears, the agitator works but the basket will not spin.
Control board fault
A faulty board, relay or triac may not send power to the motor even though the motor is healthy.
What you can safely check yourself
Try these simple checks before you call. If the problem remains, stop and book an inspection.
Check 1
Pause the cycle, open the door and redistribute the clothes evenly.
Check 2
Remove very heavy or very small loads and run a spin-only cycle.
Check 3
Check that the door or lid closes fully and the latch is not damaged.
Check 4
Make sure the machine is level and all four feet touch the floor.
Check 5
If the drum still will not spin, note any error code and call a technician.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my washing machine fill and wash but not spin?
This usually points to a drain problem, an unbalanced load, a door or lid switch fault, a worn belt or a failing motor. A technician can narrow it down quickly.
Can a worn belt cause the spin to fail?
Yes. A stretched or cracked belt slips on the pulley, so the drum cannot reach spin speed even though the motor is running.
Is it worth repairing a machine that does not spin?
In most cases yes. Belts, brushes, switches and clutches are repairable at a fraction of the cost of a new washing machine. We tell you honestly if repair is not worthwhile.
My machine stops with a UE or UB error. What does that mean?
These codes usually mean an unbalanced load. Redistribute the clothes, add or remove items to balance the weight, and check that the machine is level.
